Book of Mottos 011

Wisdom is timeless, here are a few quotes said by Marcus Cato the Censor 234 B.C. – 149 B.C.

1. “For wise men,” said he, do see the faults fools commit, and can wisely avoid them; but fools never study to follow the example of wise men’s doings.”

2. “In short he reckoned nothing a good bargain which was superfluous; but whatever it was, though sold for a farthing, he would think it a high price if you has no need of it.”

3. It is a hard thing (my Lords of Rome) to bring the belly by persuasion to reason, that hath no ears.

For (sayeth he) as every wether when he is alone, doth not obey the shepherd, but when they are all together they one follow another for love of the foremost: even so are you, for when you are together, you are all contented to be led by the noses by such whose counsel not a man alone of you would use in any private cause of your own.
